Let’s find out more about how writers nourish those creative sparks from one of Castle Gate Press’s editors, our Social Media Director Ralene Burke.
When did you first start writing? What got you started?
Well, if you don’t count high school, I started writing in 2006 on a challenge from a friend. I had an idea for a novel based on a discussion we had, and she challenged me to write. Why? Because she wanted to read that story! Such an encouragement. Since then, I’ve written several short stories and three more novels. With each experience, I’ve seen how my writing has grown.
When did you first start writing FICTION? What sparked your creativity?
I’ve always written fiction. It’s actually the NON-FICTION that’s tough for me. I don’t know what sparked my creativity–ideas, life, experience. My wild imagination is an amazing gift from the Lord that has had me telling stories for as long as I can remember.
What continues to spark your creativity, as you are working on your current project?
Whenever I’m stretched for creativity, I have several “go-tos.” First is prayer and Bible study. Why? Usually if I’m lacking creativity, it’s because I’m lacking in the spiritual area. I need to be reminded that my relationship with God is my first priority, and that my writing is my ministry to honor Him. Also, though, I can continue to fill my creativity cup by reading great books and watching inspiring movies. Sometimes, even just a night out with either my husband or my gal pals is enough to untie the knots in my head: a laughter massage.
