When I ask if God has ever taken you out of your comfort zone to perform a character overhaul on you, does a specific time and situation leap to mind? Often this happens when we discover something isn’t what it appears to be, or isn’t what we hoped. That new job. The place we moved to. The person we befriended. We may find ourselves asking, “What did I get myself into, Lord?”
But our situation didn’t surprise God one bit. In His sovereignty, He knew exactly what lay ahead of us. If we’ll work with Him, He’ll turn what looks like a dead end into a bridge to something new and beautiful.
God’s process of giving “beauty for ashes” in the lives of His children was something I decided to write about as I recently watched my parents restore a historic property. They got a little surprise there, too. After they bought what looked like a run-down 1800s house with outbuildings and a small shop fronting the main road of a once-thriving railroad town, neighbors and research revealed the property had belonged to a regionally famous line of doctors tracing back to Revolutionary War days. Not only that, but the doctors left descendants on both sides of a bi-racial community. Slowly, as what had decayed was restored, an abandoned property became a home where everyone was welcome. The shop, actually the apothecary and doctor’s office, became a community event facility.
As my parents and local work crews peeled away faded paint and wallpaper, sanded down flooring, and discovered little historical treasures in the buildings, I could picture the personal way God lovingly exposes our hearts to His spiritual restoration. Did you answer “yes” to my first question? Are you in that season of character overhaul right now? Will you let Him work? The process may be long and even painful, but as my characters Michael and Jennifer discover in The Restoration Trilogy, in the hands of the Master Renovator, the outcome is well worth the wait.
A wife, swim mom, and fan of old houses, coffee and chocolate, Denise Weimer is the author of The Georgia Gold Series and The Restoration Trilogy. When Jennifer Rushmore accepts a brooding bachelor’s offer to act as coordinator for the restoration of his family’s historic doctor’s house (White), apothecary (Widow) and log cabin (Witch) in a rural Georgia community, little does she know it’s her own heart that will undergo the greatest renovation. Three stories. Three centuries. Three lessons on the healing of the heart. And one buried mystery that threatens their redemption. http://deniseweimerbooks.webs.com
