I’d grown weary of rejections, went for a walk, and explained to God that I was done with writing, totally giving it up. I had three young children and it seemed a waste of time if I couldn’t get published. I told God that unless He clearly showed me a reason to continue, I was done.
Coming home from my walk, I found a message on my answering machine from Guideposts Magazine, wanting to publish my essay. The next day in the mail, I got a check from a parenting magazine and a clip from my article they’d already published.
God worked fast to affirm that He wanted me writing.
I didn’t get started writing fiction until fifteen years later, when one of the clients I’d done editing for asked me if I would ghostwrite a novel based on events in his life. I was hooked. He dropped the project, but I took off on my own, writing fiction.
My husband, an Anglican bishop, and I travel a lot, and often the places we visit inspire me to write my novels. Travel to India inspired me to write my first novel, Crooked Lines, released July 20. Travel to Wyoming inspired me to write my second novel, I’ll Be Seeing You, to be released in February 2016. Travel to Colorado and Charleston, South Carolina inspired another novel in progress.
Now I’m spending time in India in to follow up on tsunami relief work my husband and I were involved in ten years ago. That has already inspired me to write a nonfiction book to be published December 26 on the tsunami ten-year anniversary. Tsunami 2004-Then and Now. Devastation from the Sea. Help from Beyond. We are also stopping for a few days in the UK so hopefully my creativity will continue to be sparked for future books.
Crooked Lines is Holly Michael’s debut novel. She’s been published in Guideposts books and in various magazines and newspapers. She’s been a ghostwriter, journalist, and newspaper features writer. She and her husband, an Anglican Bishop, regularly visit India, the setting in Crooked Lines. Holly is mom of a lovely daughter, Betsy, and two sons, Jake and Nick. She enjoys watching football, especially when her sons are playing–Jake (NFL) and Nick (Rajin’ Cajuns). She and Jake, also a type 1 diabetic, have a devotional coming out in 2015.
