A predominant feature of any historical novel is that it takes place at some point in history. Since it is the setting that determines whether a novel is historical rather than the topic, almost all other genres can be a sub-genre of Historicals as well.

Did you find any surprises in this list? Fantasy, Steampunk, Time Travel are labeled as speculative fiction–and they are. But since they can also take place in historical settings, they fit within the scope of Historical Fiction as well.

I like “Historical Fiction – Steampunk” especially in Biblical settings. Steam engines and mechanical computers in the Tower of Babel! (see One World Tower – A BAbylonian Adventure)

I haven’t read much Steampunk, Michael, so it never would have crossed my mind that you could apply that genre to biblical times, especially back that far. Steampunk in the Tower of Babel–very interesting!
