Publishers will want to know that there are other books on the market that are similar to yours that have sold well. This underlines the fact that there is an audience they can sell your book to. Spend some time doing research to come up with four or five novels similar to yours in some way. Maybe they’re both romances that take place in a beach resort. Perhaps they’re both non-stop thrillers that take the protagonists to a variety of far-flung spots across the globe. Maybe both books share a unique setting or they blur the lines of genres in a similar way, like a thriller with a romantic element or a romance with a paranormal aspect.
For each comparable book, you’ll need to include the following information:
– Title
– Author
– Release Year
– Publishing House
– A few sentences about how the books are similar
– A couple of sentences about how your novel differs from the book to show that it will offer something unique to the same audience.
The key in this section of the proposal is to show that you have an audience for your book. You’re not comparing writing styles, only showing that your novel has the same audience as these books. Think of it this way, if your book were for sale on Amazon, what other books would they recommend that the purchaser might like? Since publishing is in the business of sales, you need to show them that you have a market where it will sell.
