Authors, in your social media efforts, it would be a great idea to incorporate relevant hashtags. Not too many, of course–that confuses your reader. Just one or two, carefully chosen.
So, what is a hashtag? It’s a search keyword preceded by a pound sign. Not just any word or bunch of words shoved together. Words that others might use to look for your post on Facebook or Twitter.
Tip # 1: You don’t want a unique hashtag. Nobody searches on those.
Tip #2: Suggestions for hashtags for writers. For posts aimed at writers, I am fond of #amwriting. For posts aimed at readers, #amreading. Others: #fiction, #fantasy, #romance, #YA, or whatever.
Tip #3: Make sure your chosen hashtag isn’t unique. Type it into the social media application’s search bar and see if it comes up.
Tip #4: What if you’re holding an event? You can create a hashtag for it and ask your friends to use it when referring to your event. Just cook a hashtag up, and try to make sure this one is reasonably unique and also not too long.
And there you have it! Go and sell some books!
