It’s your big opportunity to hone your writing skills by writing micro fiction for our contest, containing all the elements of story: characterization, setting, conflict, resolution.
First prize: publication on our blog and possibly in a future anthology, plus a $15 Amazon gift card. (We may also want to publish other entries besides the first place on the blog.) We’ll announce the winner a week after the deadline.
Here’s your assignment. Write a short-short story of 500 to 1000 words. Our topic this time is TIME TRAVEL. No profanity is allowed (replace it with descriptions like “he cussed a purple streak”). No explicit sex. Email it before Oct. 7 to flashfiction “at” castlegatepress.com.

If I wanted to write about an already established character, say, Frankenstein or Dracula, would that be acceptable or no?
Phyllis Wheeler says
Hi Rachel,
The established character would need to be out of copyright, so that the copyright owner doesn’t come back at us. Works from before 1928 are out of copyright. So, I think Frankenstein or Dracula would be fine. Or… how about creating your own similar character?
